Purpose Statement

The SPS Choice and Innovation initiative was established to support the Springfield Public Schools’ strategic plan (SP5), by encouraging and facilitating the development of a variety of unique and highly engaging learning opportunities. These innovative options are designed to personalize learning by meeting the diverse interests and learning styles of SPS students.

 

One of the District’s Choice offers an innovative program provided in collaboration with several Southwest Missouri school districts.  The program is designed to provide junior and senior students a hands-on, real world experience in the profession of Medicine and Health Care housed at Cox Health - Branson.  The position performs the work each morning for ½ day. The instructor will lead a strand exploring medical fields while expanding upon principles of human physiology through in-depth case studies of body systems.  Students will develop fluency in basic medical language, practice formulating treatment plans for patients and physical assessment skills. Students engage in rigorous professional development with an emphasis on career exploration in the Medicine and Health Care field. They are provided the opportunity to explore their interests through a profession and project-based learning approach.

 

GO CAPS students fast forward into their future and are fully immersed in a professional culture, solving real world problems, using industry standard tools and are mentored by real employers, which lead to substantial advanced contribution during the formative high school years.

 

Essential Functions

  • Facilitates the learning of students (e.g. creating a learning environment, integrating technology, arranging field trips, organizing age appropriate activities, etc.) from each of the GO CAPS cooperating school districts to achieve success in academic, interpersonal and daily living skills through defined lesson plans.
  • Develops or modifies curriculum resources to align with the competencies of the health sciences industry to provide students with a project-based learning experience that is transferable to a potential future employer.
  • Builds relationships with area business leaders and community liasons to expand upon the programs curriculum development, project creation, internships, etc.
  • Administers subject specific assessments in order to assess student competency levels and/or developing individual learning plans.
  • Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress in order to communication expectations; student’s achievements; developing methods for improvement and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment
  • Analyzes student achievement data to enhance learning.
  • Assesses student progress towards objectives, expectations and/or goals to provide feedback to students, parents and administration.

  • Collaborates with instructional staff, and other personnel, parents and a variety of community partners to improve the overall quality of student outcomes and achieving established classroom objectives in support of the school improvement plan.
  • Counsels students for the purpose of improving performance, health status, problem solving techniques and a variety of personal issues.
  • Demonstrates methods required to perform classroom and/or subject specific assignments to provide an effective program that addressing individual student requirements.
  • Directs student teachers, paraprofessionals, volunteers and/or student workers to provide an effective classroom program and addressing the needs of individual students.
  • Maintains a variety of confidential and non confidential manual and electronic files and records (e.g. grades, test scores, etc.) to provide up to date information and/or historical reference in accordance with established guidelines and legal requirements.
  • Manages student behavior to provide a safe and optimal learning environment.
  • Monitors students in a variety of educational environments (e.g. classroom, field trips, job shadows, business partner meetings, etc.) to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Participates in a variety of meetings (e.g. Professional Development, department meetings, Whole Faculty Study Groups, IEPs, etc.) to convey and/or gather information required to perform functions.
  • Prepares a variety of written materials (e.g. grades, attendance, anecdotal records, lesson plans, etc.) to document student progress and meet mandated requirements.
  • Reports health and safety issues to administrative personnel and/or appropriate agencies (e.g. fights, suspected child or substance abuse, inappropriate social behaviors, etc.) to maintain student's personal safety, a positive learning environment and comply with regulatory requirements and established guidelines.
  • Responds to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
  • Responds to inquiries from a variety of courses to resolve issues, provide info and/or direction.

 

Other Functions

Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

 

Job Requirements (Minimum Qualifications)

Knowledge, Skill and Ability

 

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read technical information, compose a variety of documents and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions.  Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: appropriate codes, policies, regulations and/or laws; age appropriate activities; lesson plan requirements; stages of child development; and behavioral management strategies.

 

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, highly complex, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: preparing and maintaining accurate records; applying assessment instruments; and operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications.

 

ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings and/or events; gather, collate and/or classify data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize job-related equipment. Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; directing other persons within a small work unit; utilization of resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to significantly impact the organization’s services.

 

Experience: Recent and relevant job-related experience is required.

 

Education: A Bachelor’s degree in job-related area(s) is required. A minimum of 18 hours of relevant Master’s level course is preferred.

 

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 20% sitting, 5% walking and 75% standing.  The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and in a generally hazard free environment.

Clearances

  • Criminal Background Clearance, the results of which must be satisfactory to the District, required
  • 12 panel drug screen is required by healthcare partners
  • Verification of immunizations required by healthcare partner

 

Certificates and Licenses

  • Missouri Education Certification is required
  • Ability to meet Missouri’s requirements of “Highly Qualified Teacher’s” required
